芝丸山古墳 ・ Shibamaruyama Tomb
Just a short walk from Tokyo Tower is a very important archeology site of an ancient tomb. Estimated to be completed 1600 years ago, it has the signature keyhole-shape of Japanese tombs for kings and queens. Unfortunately there's been very little exploration so far and nobody can say to whom it's built for.
A real mystery...
『国境線の恋』 ・ Cross-border Love
禅之助 is a very skillful illustrator who tells stories using still frames. With exceptional accuracy in portraying backlights, the artist excels in capturing emotions under the sun. Looking at the paintings you'll find yourself wanting to learn more about the lives of the characters.

蕎麦シカモア ・ Soba Sycamore
Just a coincidence while researching for Google's breakthrough in quantum computing, I came across a Soba restaurant in Tokyo sharing the same name of that processor. Already 6 years in business, the shop has been maintaining an outstanding photo blog capturing tons of fresh ingredients. It's always a bliss to see delicious food being prepared so professionally.

東京茶寮 ・ Tokyo Saryo
The "World's first Hand-drip Green Tea Shop"near the Sangenjaya Station (三軒茶屋) in Tokyo is a demonstration of ultimate business minimalism. A square counter centered in four white walls, the shop displays a short menu offering only a few kinds of green teas. Watch the short video to find out what the experience may feel like.

禁酒禁煙 抱き枕 ・ No Alcohol No Smoking Cushions
Need a very big reminder for your new healthy determinations? Then these cushions may really help. Maybe... probably...

十月桜 ・ October Sakura
Some Sakura trees bloom in October. There were a few in Shinjuku Gyoen (新宿御苑) just beginning their show a few days ago. Although nowhere near the March peak season, it's still a most welcomed scene when many greens are just starting to fade.
やさい物語 ・ Vegetable Story*
It's 21 century and about time to do some farming at home! With the help of IoT, this box can control the light, take pictures of the greens and monitor the growing conditions closely. Recorded data are accessible from the touch of a smartphone, so no worries during a long trip.

野反湖 ・ Lake Nozoriko
Roughly 3 hours ride from JR Ueno station (train + taxi or car) and you can be strolling around a lake born of the Nozori Dam in the Gunma Prefecture (群馬県). The view on a clear day is magnificent and just ideal for hiking. For the few lucky ones decided to go at night, a million stars will be welcoming you from the sky and the reflective water. Transportation is a bit tricky but anyone looking for an adventure and cover shots will not be deterred.

江戸東京たてもの園 ・ Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum
A fascinating museum featuring 30 reconstructed historical buildings in their original glory. Included in the list is a bathhouse (shown in the photo) where you can see the huge Mt. Fuji wall painting. The museum provides very good English information so no fear of missing any detail.

ゾンビスナック ・ Zombie Snacks
Revenge time! As suggested on the package: Let's eat "ZOMBIE" and then you are gonna be excited!
Not your favorite flavor? It's also available in chicken soup taste. I guess that's more realistic than seaweed.

廣田硝子 蓋ちょこ ・ Hirota Glass Futachoko
A lid could mean a lot when it comes to tableware. These elegant handmade glass cups were skillfully formed using a 150-year technique called "mold-blowing", then coated and precision-cut to incise a variety of lovely patterns popular since the Edo Era.

花粉症 ・ Pollen Allergies
October is still a high season in Japan for pollen allergy sufferings. Major sources are:
It's important to get prepared by wearing a mask and drink more citric juices.
申し訳ありません ・ Sincere Apologies
A bashful sign during the railroad maintenance of Yonezawa Iide Line.
Only in Japan.
髙澤ろうそく ・ Takazawa Candles
An endangered industry, handmade traditional Japanese candles are now produced solely by this company in Ishikawa Prefecture. The candles are diligently made using natural ingredients and the special wick enables a very calm, bright and long-lasting flame. The new designs also merge harmoniously with any modern interior. Spending an evening in candle light is perhaps the best remedy to a stressful day.

大観山展望台 ・ Mt. Taikanzan Observatory
About 3 hours from Tokyo, near Hakone is Mt. Taikanzan where a nice view of Lake Ashi (芦ノ湖) and Mt. Fuji can be found. The area is familiar to most tourists but probably very few have climbed up to the observatory near the peak.

東京琴 ・ Tokyo Harp
Traditional Japanese Harp is all wood and hand-crafted to perfection. Watch how it's born in one of the workshops in Tokyo. By the way, it's mind-boggling how they could keep the work area so clean.
テレビ体操 ・ TV Exercise
Popular exercise sets that every Japanese would know about are the "Radio Exercise 1 and 2" (ラジオ体操), being broadcasted alternately on NHK every morning in their "TV Exercise" program. Amazingly, the first set was introduced in 1951, and was practiced with its designated background music from AM radios.
This tradition will probably go on as long as Japan is inhabited.

手動鉛筆削り ・ Manual Pencil Sharpener
Of all shapes and sizes of pencil sharpeners, here comes the champion! Retro camera-looking, it almost captures the gist of photo-taking in the 60's, were it not for a wrong side where the rotating handle is attached. In any case, a good-looking little gem on the desk.
お菓子な動物園 ・ Sweet Zoo
How about eating over 30 kinds of animals in a zoo? Now you can! Just venture into this pastry shop. On-line orders only.

Webshop: https://www.butlers-cafe.jp/mailorder/ps/delivery/delivery.php (in Japanese only, some animals may not be available)
東京都風速 ・ Tokyo Prefecture Wind Speed
A nice animation of the wind directions and speed in the area. It's particular relevant on a crazy windy day like today. World map also available at the bottom-right link.

マクセル全固体電池 ・ Maxell All Solid Battery
Announced in September was a Japanese innovation that may change the world -- a completely solid coin battery. Why, you said? Please consider: these batteries can supply high current in environments as hot as 100ºC and keep functioning over 10 years. Do you know how easy lithium batteries can flame up? That's why airplanes are still not electric and carry dangerous fuels. And if a battery can last over 10 years, how many non-decomposing toxic garbage landfills can be avoided? Trust me, all electric cars and airplanes will use similar technologies in the future.

純喫茶 ・ Pure Coffee Shop
Japanese Language Quiz: What's the difference between Cafe (カフェ), Coffee Shop (喫茶店) and Pure Coffee Shop (純喫茶)?
Answer: Basically, a Cafe can offer any food or alcoholic drinks. A Coffee Shop cannot cook food (only pre-made bakery or simple snacks) and it may turn into a bar in the evening. A Pure Coffee Shop is the most limited where no cooking is done nor alcoholic drinks are served any time of the day.
浅草地下街 ・ Asakusa Underground Mall
This underground shopping arcade is the oldest of its kind remaining in Japan (since 1955) but lots of people are simply unaware. I can't blame them because it's not a shiny attractive location. However it has the perfect "cinematic nostalgia" or "post-apocalyptic" feel to it that may trigger some vivid imaginations. Go there and have a try.
東京カラス ・ Tokyo Crows
These birds sharing the landscape with us Tokyo dwellers are pretty smart if you ask me. Watch how they use a public drinking fountain in the park. Judging from the popularity of the NHK "Chiko-chan Will Scold You! Don't sleep through life!" mascot Kyo-chan (キョエちゃん), they seem to be well accepted as our friendly neighbors now.
壽屋 BORDER BREAK 輝星・破式
Personally I'm not a big fan of plastic models but the ones offered by Kotobukiya is worth a good look from an artistic point of view. This one from the BORDER BREAK series releasing next month is just 160mm tall (about a can of beer), but the details and the mechanical structure is beyond belief. Have a close look and imagine all the plannings involved in producing something like this.

千代治のくつ下 ・ Chiyoji Socks
People often ask why Japan-made socks are so expensive. I have no answer to that but as with anything crafted in Japan, I think the selling point is trustable quality. A sock producer who managed to knit socks for 68 years and still going strong simply cannot disappoint. Chiyoji is a perfect example why a few bucks extra can buy you a lot of satisfactions, day after day.

幻の蟹 ・ Deep Sea Red Crab
A local delicacy from the bottom of the Sagami Bay (相模湾) and Suruga Bay (駿河湾). These giant crabs normally roam the Atlantic Ocean floors but rarely do they appear near Tokyo. With superior taste and freshness, now is a good time to crack open some!

コクヨ グルーテープカッター ・ Kokuyo Glue Tape Cutter
It solves the problem of retrieving cellulose tape when you have only one hand free. This tape cutter from the long-established stationery maker Kokuyo attaches itself with suction cups. What a nice idea!
渋谷スクランブルスクエア ・ Shibuya Scramble Square
Scheduled to open next month (November 1), it's an amazing vertical shopping center (212 shops on 16 floors!) with direct access from JR Shibuya station. A landmark spot will be its roof terrace "Shibuya Sky" featuring the sky + 360º view through glass fence (tickets available now: ¥1,800 per adult).

始発列車・First scheduled train
Tourists are more likely to experience morning travels so it's a good idea to check the time of the first available train. According to Wikipedia, the earliest train in Tokyo is Keihin-Tohoku line (京浜東北線) at 4:18am departing Sakuragicho station (桜木町駅), as of March 2018.
Just a fun fact for the day.
